San Francisco’s Annual Open Studios is Reimagined to Support Artists During COVID
The City’s largest organization of studio artists, ArtSpan, revamps it’s popular 45-year tradition to boost struggling artists.
SAN FRANCISCO - Even before COVID, many artists struggled to maintain their foothold in San Francisco. The pandemic has introduced a new wave of challenges, but ArtSpan, the City’s largest organization of studio artists is not giving up. Each year residents look forward to the annual citywide Open Studios event, and COVID-be-damned, the show will go on.
“Like many arts organizations throughout the city, we had to adapt to meet these unprecedented times,” says Executive Director Joen Madonna. “Artists need our support and the best way to show that support is to BUY ART. Open studios will look different, but will provide the same opportunities to engage with artists, get an intimate look at their art practices and purchase their work.”
ArtSpan presents SF (Open) Studios, a virtual adaptation of a 45-year San Francisco tradition. From September 16 through October 14, 2020, SF (Open) Studios invites visitors to experience California’s vibrant San Francisco Bay Area art community from wherever they are. Featuring over 250 artists distributed across multiple, interactive virtual events––a different grouping at each event––SF(O)S offers unique and engaging opportunities to authentically connect with and purchase from a diverse set of creators while ensuring your health and safety.

SF Open Studios' History
ArtSpan evolved from SF Open Studios (SFOS), begun in 1975 by a small group of enterprising artists who concurrently opened their studios to the public annually over one weekend to increase the accessibility of their work. Following the devastation of the 1989 earthquake, these artists created a strong organization to ensure SFOS would remain a San Francisco tradition, and in 1991, ArtSpan received its non-profit, tax-exempt status. SFOS has grown exponentially, spanning four weekends, with over 800 participating artists and 100,000+ visitors.*
*Public offerings have been indefinitely postponed due to the global pandemic
